Sarah what a powerful post and reflection this is! I almost didn't comment because I feel I am without words, and I need a moment to digest it and read it again to think clearly, but in the name of being authentic, I decided just to tell you that this article is incredibly impactful, and am so glad you put it out to the world!

Oh my gosh I’m so honored and flattered and humbled and touched, Lia! I am SO happy and fulfilled that my words affected you so much, and I truly appreciate your letting me know it 💗💗💗

I love this, Sarah! This is such a valid inquiry and I think one that is important. Monetizing your passion has become the new "should" which completely misses the point, and I think everyone needs to make their own decisions based on values, desires, and intuition. I trust that you are and will continue to be on the right path for YOU, however that looks.

I appreciate your kinds words and of course your generous support and encouragement very much, Cara!

Totally agree that self-employment in the post-girlboss era is very in vogue at the moment, and I’m glad I had the chance to think on it.

The truth is, I’ve reflected that I do desire to do something for my work that makes a positive difference/impact (no matter how seemingly miniscule) in the world and in people’s lives. I had a lightbulb moment last week that if, for one of my current corporate projects, I gave it my absolute all OR I simply checked the box to complete it, it would literally make no difference in anyone’s life.

I want to live with the responsibility and fun and difficulty and challenge and reward of having work that I get to see a positive impact from.

Those are my two cents for now!

Wow wow WOW. Congratulations on 100+ subscribers and the rebrand, the new look is gorgeous!! But what really struck me here is your honesty about pausing to question whether you actually want the monetized-passion path, or whether you've just absorbed that you should want it from everyone around you. That takes so much self-awareness. There's nothing inauthentic about loving the comfort your work affords you, and giving yourself two quiet, un-influenced weeks to feel into what you truly want sounds like the most aligned thing you could do. Enjoy the cheese and the sunshine. See you when you're back. Can't WAIT to hear about it :)

Thanks so much for your thoughtful reply and as always your encouragement, Olivia! I’m trying!

The last three weeks (I extended!) have been eye opening, while very non-groundbreaking in the best way. I’m excited to keep exploring and grateful I get to have an expander in you for what is possible in the vein of writing & passion-driven pursuits for income :)

Sarah I just loved this post!! I began reading your Substack as another traumatized former Catholic and enjoyed the whole journey, especially the cheese mongering. I'm excited for the Cosmic Crumbs if they come our way or not. As someone who monetized their creative passions in their career, I honestly preach so much about the value of hobbies. Work will always be work and I agree with Philip that the goal should be more enjoyment. I hope you enjoy your two weeks off and it gives you clarity and inspiration. Your writing is so lovely and a treat I hope you return <3

Aww my gosh Lucy I’m truly honored!! I appreciate it so much. I’ve been curious about writing a bit more about my specific Catholic journey, since I feel like so many women out there did not have a great experience with it. I’d love to chat more about it the next time we meet up!

I am so glad we get to talk hobbies and outlets and all the things. I totally agree that the bottom line should be enjoyment and truly finding satisfaction, no matter what that looks like. Thank you for being here and thank you for everything 🥰
